Urban storyteller

I’m interested in empathy and connection. Do they have natural limits such as time or biological differences, and if so, what are they? In my work, this shows in themes of ecological questions - connection between human and nature, and social questions - how to learn to see more fully another human being.

Trained both as an architect and visual artist, my work has a continued emphasis on site specific work, and I mainly work with commissions for installations and sculpture in public space. Every work starts with getting to know the site – contact me at maija@kovari.fi and let's make something together. P.S. It’s in this interview that I was first called an urban storyteller - I like it.

Contemporary art meets urban design

Starting my artist career, I made works for gallery exhibitions, but my interest in public spaces grew. I studied to become an architect, and soon started working in urban planning for Ramboll, one of the leading consulting companies in Scandinavia in the field. Surprised about the lack of inclusion of contemporary artists in the company’s urban space projects, I began developing ways to integrate these fields first inside the company, and later in my own company, Public Art Agency Finland. Since, Public Art Agency Finland has helped dozens of cities, organising competitions, curating, and creating public art strategies, as well as facilitating the production process of individual public art projects. I’m also an active public speaker in the field of public art in Finland, and enjoy researching international best practices through residencies in cities such as Singapore (2016) and New York (2018).
