New operator in the field of Finnish street furniture design

I recently had the pleasure of meeting the founders of a Finnish startup called Bongo House. A new company started only in the beginning of this year their mission is to connect Finnish designers and artists with local manufacturers, to produce high quality street furniture that makes you smile.

What impressed me was that instead of being just a new designer company, they aim at creating a network trough which new ideas and ways of doing could more easily find their way into production and to use.  I highly appreciate their friendly and open approach and wish them the best of luck in facilitating the collaboration between the artists, manufacturers and the municipalities interested in building more interesting public spaces.

The work in the cover photo is called Ystävä (Friend) and it's designed by Risto Luoma. You'll find more photos of it here.

Julkinen taide esiintyy yhä useamman kaupungin strategiassa keinona luoda viihtyisyyttä ja mielenkiintoa uusille asuinalueille ja kävelypainotteisemmiksi muuttuviin keskustoihin.Kyselytutkimusten mukaan kaupunkilaiset haluavat taidetta arkiympäristöihinsä. Toiveista huolimatta käytännön rakenteet yhteistyöhön ovat kuitenkin usein vieraita yhtä lailla taiteilijoille, kuin taidekentästä erillään toimiville suunnittelutiimeille. Taide saattaa esiintyä julkisen tilan suunnitelmissa jollain tasolla, mutta usein karsiutuu toteutusvaiheessa koetun irrallisuutensa ja kalliutensa vuoksi.
